Why Plain-Text Cold Emails Outperform HTML

By The Inboxx Team·B2B Prospecting & Cold Email Specialists · · 6 min read

Open your own inbox and look at what you actually read versus what you skip. The messages you read tend to look like they came from a person. The ones you skip (bright banners, big buttons, three different fonts) look like marketing, and your brain filters them out before you've even registered the content.

Cold email works the same way. When you're trying to start a conversation with a busy decision-maker, the format of the message matters as much as the words. Here's why plain text consistently beats polished HTML for outbound prospecting.

1. Plain text looks like a real email

A plain-text email looks identical to the messages your prospect gets from colleagues, clients and their own team all day. There's no visual cue screaming "this is a campaign." That single fact changes how the message is received: it reads as a one-to-one note rather than a broadcast, which lowers the reader's guard and raises the odds they actually engage.

The goal of a cold email isn't to look impressive. It's to look like the start of a normal conversation.

2. It's friendlier to spam filters

Mailbox providers weigh dozens of signals when deciding whether a message belongs in the primary inbox, promotions, or spam. Heavy HTML emails tend to carry the hallmarks of bulk marketing: large image-to-text ratios, tracking-heavy templates, multiple links and styling that mirrors known promotional senders.

Plain text sidesteps a lot of that. A short, personal message with a sensible text-to-link ratio simply looks less like the bulk mail that filters are tuned to catch. It's not a magic bullet (deliverability still depends on authentication and sender reputation), but the format gives you a head start.

3. It forces better writing

When you can't hide behind a designed template, the words have to carry the message. That's a good constraint. It pushes you to:

  • Get to the point in the first two lines, before the preview text runs out.
  • Write to one person about one relevant problem, not a generic audience.
  • Cut anything that doesn't move the reader toward a reply.

A plain-text email that respects the reader's time will almost always outperform a beautiful one that buries the point under a hero image.

4. It scales personalisation

Personalisation in HTML often stops at "Hi {{first_name}}." Plain text invites genuine relevance: a specific line about the prospect's company, role or a recent trigger event, which only works when you've built a tightly targeted list in the first place. Because the format already feels personal, even a small amount of real personalisation has an outsized effect on reply rates.

What "good" looks like

A strong plain-text cold email is usually under 120 words, opens with a reason you're reaching out to them specifically, makes one clear and low-friction ask, and signs off like a human. No banners, no unsubscribe footers dressed up as design, no walls of text.

Plain text isn't a gimmick. It's a reflection of how trust actually forms over email. Strip away the marketing gloss, write to a real person about a real problem, and you give your message its best chance of being read and answered.

This is exactly how we run campaigns at Inboxx: personalised, plain-text outreach that lands in the primary inbox and starts real conversations. It's a great fit for startups and SMEs finding their first repeatable channel. If you'd rather have a team handle it end to end, tell us about your offer and we'll come back with a tailored proposal.
